Beaufort Hurricane Force 12 from Storm Barbara ?
The Meteorological Office issued an amber weather warning for northernmost Scotland as Storm Barbara approaches the UK.
The Met Office said the worst of the weather was expected Friday and Christmas Eve Saturday. Gusts of up to 90mph (the maximum, Force 12 on the Beaufort Scale) are forecasted for parts of Scotland with Christmas travellers being warned to expect disruption to their travelling plans and “be prepared”.
The BBC reports ‘ Grahame Madge, spokesman for the Met Office, said: “We have had the good fortune to be able to issue the weather warnings ahead of Storm Barbara coming, with plenty of time hopefully for people to change their plans if they need to.”But the nature of the storm means it still has the potential to have an impact on power supplies, structures, and disrupt bridge and ferry crossings.”‘
UK Coastguard issued a coastal safety warning, advising people to check the weather and tidal conditions before they set out.
Already, today at 08.20 Thursday 22nd December, a gust of 65.52mph was recorded at Westray Airport on the Orkney Islands.
