Private: What is Delta T? A simplified guide to Kestrel’s advanced features

26 July, 2022

We often get phone calls asking for the difference between our Kestrel meters and the advantages and disadvantages of each. More experienced Kestrel users will know the ins and outs of each meter and know which meter is best for their activity – whether this be shooting, sailing or simply taking interest in the environmental conditions, but many people are overwhelmed by the choice of meters and are unsure of what is appropriate for them.

We have put together this handy glossary of terms to help you understand the different features of our products so that you can make more informed decisions without having to waste your time searching the web for answers.

What is LiNK? LiNK is a Bluetooth feature that allows Kestrel meters to be wirelessly connected to an android or iOS app on your phone. It allows you to see real-time data in an easy-to-read format and export your data onto a csv file.

What is an NV model? These models come with a night vision capability – giving you the freedom to use the meter all day AND all night. Kestrel NV models come with a large easily read LCD display with backlight

What is Wind Chill? The cooling effect of wind blowing on a surface. The wind chill reading demonstrates the ‘real feel’ after wind has had its effect.

What is Heat Index? What the temperature really feels like relative to the humidity’s effect on air temperature (in shaded areas)

What is Dew Point Temperature? the temperature the air needs to be cooled to (at constant pressure) to achieve a relative humidity (RH) of 100%

What is Wet Bulb Temperature? The lowest temperature to which air can be cooled by the evaporation of water into the air at a constant pressure. This gives an indication of how hot the temperature is in direct sunlight (as opposed to heat index).

What is Volume Air Flow? The amount of air that flows through the system in given time frame.

What is Delta T? The difference in temperature between dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures. Wet bulb temperature is the temperature in direct sunlight. Delta T can give an accurate temperature difference between two different time’s or location’s. Its an accurate predictor of chemical evaporation rates. It can also allow you to have a better understanding on what is required to keep equilibrium in different rooms for example.

What is Thermal Work Limit? A measure of Heat Stress that shows the limiting (or maximum) sustainable metabolic rate that well-hydrated, acclimatized individuals can maintain while working.

What are Built in Flag Settings? Coloured zones in heat stress trackers that demonstrate intensity of heat stress.

What is an Integrated Ballistics Calculator? A calculation that converts environmental data and target information into a trajectory correction one can use to hit a long range target.

Look here to see what meters offer each feature and give us a call or email if you have any further questions.
