When Nature Meets Technology: A Gull vs. WindSonic Moment on the South Coast

At Richard Paul Russell Ltd, we pride ourselves on designing and supplying reliable meteorological instruments that stand up to the elements—rain, wind, and sometimes even wildlife.

Recently, one of our customers in a popular seaside town on the south coast of England captured a rather unexpected moment: a seagull, likely distracted by a tasty helping of fish and chips, collided head-on with the top of a WindSonic sensor we had supplied.

📽️ Watch the incredible moment in the video below!

The unfortunate gull seemed to be so focused on its target meal that it completely missed the WindSonic sensor in its flight path. After a rather dramatic impact and a short stay on the ground, the gull managed to recover and fly off—hopefully with nothing more than a bruised ego.

As for our WindSonic sensor? True to form, it proved its resilience. All it needed was a quick replacement of the top reflector, and it was back in action—delivering live wind data once again to WeatherFile.com.

This incident is the first time we’ve ever seen a WindSonic take a hit like this. While it's designed to withstand extreme environmental conditions, we must admit that “avian impact” wasn’t on our usual test checklist!

At Richard Paul Russell Ltd, even when nature throws us a curveball (or a gull), we ensure minimal downtime and continued performance.
