The Kestrel 5500AG delivers all the environmental data you need for livestock care, crop production, barn welfare and other agricultural activities. This compact rugged IP67 rated handheld meter can be used within barns and livestock enclosures or to determine crop spraying conditions when wind speed and direction are of importance.
The Kestrel 5500AG calculates Delta T measurements for determining acceptable spraying conditions. Delta T uses ambient temperature and dew point to provide guidance on the evaporation rate of sprayed chemicals, so you can select the best time and spray nozzle. The Kestrel 5500AG combines Delta T, wind speed, and direction with average wind speed and maximum wind gusts automatically ensuring the data is readily at hand to determine safe crop spraying conditions and manage spray drift.
THI (Temperature-Humidity Index) is used widely to measure and determine heat stress risk during livestock production and transportation operations. This measurement combines temperature and relative humidity to deliver management policies to maximise animal health, welfare and productivity. The Kestrel 5500AG calculates and logs on-site THI based on user selection of either the NRC (National Research Council, 1971) or Yousef (Yousef, 1985) accepted THI calculations.
Barn ventilation and air movement are critical factors in delivering best practice for animal health, welfare and comfort. The Kestrel 5500AG can quantify air movement at the exact location helping to determine fan performance and duct discharge velocity. Automatic calculations take the duct shape and dimensions to deliver volume air flow calculations, no calculator is needed to determine airflow with the Kestrel 5500AG – a few quick menu picks and built-in averaging gives you accurate readings instantly.
Many livestock professionals also grow and store grains, hay and other feedstuffs. The Kestrel 5500AG can measure micro-climates around the farm to determine where mould and disease may be a problem, ensuring conditions are right for harvesting, drying, and storage. Leave the Kestrel 5500AG in place anywhere in the field, barn or greenhouse to get a graphical history of overnight conditions.
The Kestrel 5500AG also calculates and logs over 10,000 sets of time-stamped data.
The Kestrel 5500AG has Bluetooth connectivity allowing you to transfer data wirelessly to an iOS (iPhone, iPad) device or Android smartphone or tablet when within range using the appropriate Kestrel LiNK App. You can also transfer data wirelessly to a Windows or Mac computer using the optional Kestrel Bluetooth USB Dongle (sold separately). Data can be viewed live on the App up to 100 feet away (line of sight).
When combined with the Kestrel Vane Mount and Kestrel Tripod the Kestrel 5500AG becomes a stand-alone environmental monitoring station as the large wind vane and precision pivot keep the Kestrel oriented into the wind for continuous measurement and logging of all the key environmental parameters.
Mil-SPEC-810G drop tested with an IP67 waterproof rating the Kestrel 5500AG is designed and constructed to withstand the harsh treatment it will receive in the agricultural industry. The unit comes with a five-year warranty and certificate of conformity as standard.

Crop Spraying
Every single Kestrel model offers fast and certified-accurate wind speed measurements in a unit that fits conveniently into your pocket, making it easy to be in full regulatory compliance. In hot, dry conditions, evaporation can send your expensive chemicals uselessly into the air rather than onto your crops. In these conditions, selecting an appropriate nozzle and increasing the spray droplet size can minimize costly evaporation. Kestrel models are available to measure dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, Delta T, relative humidity and dew point temperature. Every Kestrel humidity measurement uses our patented fast-acting humidity sensor with accuracy guaranteed through a two-point calibration. Wet bulb temperature is pressure-corrected to ensure accuracy even at high altitudes and low humidity. If your application requires documentation of the weather conditions, use the Kestrel 5000's 2000-point memory to conveniently store all environmental information with the single press of a button, and later upload your stored data to a computer to create a log of spraying conditions (requires optional interface). Barn Ventilation
A Kestrel 3000 Pocket Weather Meter allows you to measure the key parameters - air velocity, temperature, and relative humidity and due to its compact size this can be done right next to the livestock and the environment they are experiencing. Complete with an optional rugged carry case that can easily be clipped to your belt, the Kestrel 3000 will always be close at hand to ensure you can complete spot checks efficiently whilst improving your stocks safety and health. Viticulture
A Kestrel Pocket Weather Meter is also a valuable tool when planning your vineyard. Tracking conditions at potential vine locations can help you develop an accurate understanding of your property's microclimates and select the varietals and growing sites that will ensure success. Crop Harvesting
Livestock Heat & Cold Monitoring
Every Kestrel model, from the Kestrel 3000 and up, includes a heat stress index measurement, ensuring you know when to take appropriate cooling measures in time to prevent sickness and loss. Wind chill is equally important in the winter. A cow's energy requirements are estimated to increase 1% for each degree the wind chill is below 32°F, and the effect is even more severe for a wet cow. These increased energy requirements have to be made up in additional feed or the animals will fail to thrive. Every Kestrel model from the Kestrel 2000 and up includes wind chill measurement, letting you know when it is critical to provide additional feed energy and/or wind protection. |

Air fields
Recent applications have seen multiple WindSonic sensors at varying heights gathering data via SpaceLogger data loggers determining the variation in wind velocity from ground level upwards. Other applications include wind and weather analysis for parachute drop zones, local flying clubs and hot air ballooning events. Aircraft Hanger Door Operating Systems
Hangar doors often have high wind speed limits and operators must ensure they work within these. The FlexiWind systems with WS-15A displays not only allow for remote viewing and data logging of wind speed and direction data but there is also a single relay switch within the WS-15A display. This allows the hangar doors to be locked down when a defined wind speed limit is met. Helipads

Remote Weather Data Collection
SpaceLoggers are designed to function remotely requiring only 7-30V DC power. The data is stored on an SD memory card so no PC hook-up is required in the field. In the case of the SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data logger, wind speed and direction can be relayed directly to PC over the local Wi-Fi network. The SpaceLogger S10 is a hugely versatile data logger and may be configured for virtually any sensor outputting RS232 data, including devices requiring polling or handshake to enable data output. Mapping Conditions & Life on the Sea Bed
The SpaceLogger S10 data loggers were part of the equipment on three 3000 metre depth rated ‘pods' along with batteries, video processing equipment and control electronics.
Marcus Shirley of Mr ROV, a member of the research team, confirmed back to us: Environmental Monitoring
The Richard Paul Russell Ltd systems use ultrasonic WindSonic and MetPak technology which are pre calibrated and have no moving mechanical parts thus require very little on-going maintenance, reducing operational costs. Pollution Control
The FlexiMet system from Richard Paul Russell Ltd uses the Gill MetPak sensor with an integrated WindSonic ultrasonic wind sensor for high accuracy wind speed and direction measurement combined with air temperature, relative humidity, dew point and barometric pressure readings. When used remotely the system can be powered by battery and solar power with the SpaceLogger W10 data logger acquiring the data into a CSV file for easy download to PC. If the system is held within a Wi-Fi network the SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data logger will allow 'real time' viewing of the data on PC or via the Weather-File website. The majority of systems we supply are customised and Richard Paul Russell Ltd will work with customers to develop bespoke solutions. Our expert team can advise on a solution that will meet your exact requirements. |
Fire-fighting & Emergency Response
Fire-fighting
Preferred models are the Kestrel 3000 and Kestrel 3500 delivering fire behaviour prediction from wind speed combined with temperature, relative humidity, dew point and wet bulb temperature. This information is key to monitoring heat stress and avoiding heat injury or death of personnel. Emergency Response
HAZMAT teams can rely on the Kestrel 5400 with Bluetooth and portable vane mount as a complete weather kit able to measure all the parameters required for plume modelling whether CAMEO/ALOHA or PEAC. Personnel dressed in heavy protective clothing are safeguarded from the potential effect of heat stress with this variable being specifically measured. Using the Bluetooth data transfer facility all data can be logged and analysed before during and after personnel deployment. |
Health & Safety Monitoring
Working at Height The Health and Safety Executive in their health and safety in roof work paper make specific reference to wind and weather conditions stating that weather conditions should be considered when planning any work at height. Obviously wind, rain, ice or snow can have a direct impact on how secure a foot holding will be. HSE Advises Maximum Wind Speed
2. A sudden gust of wind can lead to loss of balance. Roof sheets and, in some circumstances, roofing membrane should not be fixed in windy weather as people can easily be thrown off-balance while carrying a sheet up to or on the roof, particularly when handling large sheeting materials during work on industrial buildings. 3. It is not only in industrial roofing that care must be taken in windy conditions. A slater or tiler cannot work safely in high winds and a roll of roofing membrane can become mobile if it is caught by the wind. On flat roofs, materials such as felts are equally affected and the effect of high wind upon hot bitumen when it is being poured can be extremely dangerous.
4. When deciding whether to continue or suspend work, consider: 5. A competent contractor should use a hand-held anemometer to measure wind speed if large sheets are being handled. 6. The Beaufort scale (Table 2) gives descriptions of how trees, smoke etc will behave at certain wind speeds. |
Laboratory Applications
Laboratory Equipment with RS232 Output
The SpaceLogger S10 is readily configured to record the output from numerous instruments and devices producing time-stamped records in .CSV file format. SpaceLoggers are commonly used for recording cycle records from autoclave machines. They provide a cost effective and efficient way to monitor equipment with an RS232 output including weighing scales, refrigerators, freezers and storage rooms. The SpaceLogger T10 model is ideal for balances or analysers with a print command and RS232 output and will keep a text record identical to the paper print-out. This file can be read using Notepad or similar. |

Dockside Cranes
Richard Paul Russell Ltd has developed specific wind systems for crane use. The systems utilise a Gill ultrasonic sensor mounted high on the crane jib / boom. This is then linked to a WS-15A display in the cab that has high and low alarm settings ensuring an audible or visual alarm is activated when the wind speed reaches the maximum allowed. The wind data is recorded using the SpaceLogger W10 or SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data loggers providing date and time stamped data for operator records. In the case of the SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data logger, wind speed and direction can be relayed directly to a site office PC and viewed live using our WeatherFile website. The majority of systems we supply are customised and Richard Paul Russell Ltd will work with customers to develop bespoke solutions. Our expert team can advise on a solution that will meet your exact requirements. Port & Harbour Authorities
The environmental data gathered can be viewed local using the WS-15A display or when connected to the SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data logger over the Wi-Fi network on PC with our WeatherFile website. The system delivers a maintenance free, robust and highly accurate solution for local weather information. Essential data for harbour authorities, visiting ships and recreational water sport participants. |

Missile Trajectory Prediction
A projectile moving through the air is effected by a number of forces including wind, temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity, so accurate monitoring of all weather parameters is essential. UAV
Because the size and design of UAV's varies greatly, knowing the surface wind conditions is critical to ensure control of the UAV is maintained. Any deviation from the planned flight path can pose a safety risk to ground crew and could result in serious damage to or total loss of the aircraft. Recently multiple Gill WindSonic sensors have been connected at varying heights with data being monitored via SpaceLogger data loggers giving essential information for post launch and pre landing flight. Temporary or Remote Air Fields
Recent applications have seen multiple WindSonic sensors at varying heights gathering data via SpaceLogger data loggers determining the variation in wind velocity from ground level upwards. |

Pete Moore from Shooting Sports Magazine reviews the
Kestrel 2500NV weather meter
"If accurate shooting is your goal then you need to have all bases covered, consider a wind meter ... ""... I approach my hunting by ensuring I have all the data and the right items I need to make the shot count every time... a chance to try out a wind meter was a bit of a revelation and now I know what I have been missing. For me the real revelation was to know the actual wind speed, followed by the ability to get high, low and average readings quickly and apply them to a firing solution. The biggest surprise was how far out my eyeball methods of judging the speed were." Pete Reckons

SpaceLoggers have been used extensively for projects including sub-sea condition research, wind farm site analysis, pollution and noise monitoring and road traffic analysis, particularly where equipment is remote or space or power at a premium. The SpaceLogger S10 for example offers a versatile solution to gathering data from numerous devices with RS232 output when it would be impractical to have direct link to PC. The SpaceLogger S10 connects directly to up to two RS232 data inputs, the data is stored on to an SD memory card that can be easily transferred to PC. The SpaceLogger A10 will take up to 2 4-20mA inputs as well as an RS232 input, converting all to a combined, time-stamped serial data output and .CSV file. |

The systems can be remotely positioned with radio links delivering a constant data feed or by cable depending on distance. If you require a separate display remotely, e.g. your starting hut is positioned away from the club house display, the WS-15A Display provides a compact robust cost effective solution. All the data can be logged using the SpaceLogger W10 (WindLogger) a compact unit that requires low power it will date and time stamp your data direct onto SD card for later analysis. The SpaceLogger W8 Wireless option will allow live viewing of the data via our WeatherFile website. Golf Clubs
The WeatherFile software delivers a professional display within the clubhouse or over the internet giving golfers real time information, helping them to decide on the correct clothing or when to sneak in that après work round. Once installed the Richard Paul Russell Ltd system requires virtually no maintenance due to there being no moving parts and unlike a traditional cup and vane wind system it won't stop when a bird lands on it.
