Crop Spraying

Crop Spraying The safety of crop spraying is reliant on measurements of relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction, these measurements are also critical for maximising the effectiveness of the spraying process. This is also a heavily regulated area with many regions specifying maximum permitted wind speed when spraying to minimise spray drift.

Every single Kestrel model offers fast and certified-accurate wind speed measurements in a unit that fits conveniently into your pocket, making it easy to be in full regulatory compliance. In hot, dry conditions, evaporation can send your expensive chemicals uselessly into the air rather than onto your crops. In these conditions, selecting an appropriate nozzle and increasing the spray droplet size can minimize costly evaporation. Kestrel models are available to measure dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, Delta T, relative humidity and dew point temperature. Every Kestrel humidity measurement uses our patented fast-acting humidity sensor with accuracy guaranteed through a two-point calibration. Wet bulb temperature is pressure-corrected to ensure accuracy even at high altitudes and low humidity.

If your application requires documentation of the weather conditions, use the Kestrel 5000's 2000-point memory to conveniently store all environmental information with the single press of a button, and later upload your stored data to a computer to create a log of spraying conditions (requires optional interface).

Barn Ventilation

Barn Ventilation Environmental control is key to ensure the health of livestock. Effective ventilation and temperature and humidity control of livestock facilities is fundamental and can reduce disease and prevent stock loss, as well as improve your rate of gain and feed-conversion efficiency.

A Kestrel 3000 Pocket Weather Meter allows you to measure the key parameters - air velocity, temperature, and relative humidity and due to its compact size this can be done right next to the livestock and the environment they are experiencing. Complete with an optional rugged carry case that can easily be clipped to your belt, the Kestrel 3000 will always be close at hand to ensure you can complete spot checks efficiently whilst improving your stocks safety and health.

Viticulture

Viticulture Vineyard managers need essential environmental conditions data to maximise the harvest and minimise vine damage. The Kestrel 3000 monitors the key parameters of wind speed, air temperature, relative humidity and dew point right next to the vine. This helps determine the frost protection requirements in the key spring and autumn seasons. If the air is dry (low dew point) heat loss will be greater than when the air is moist, and the threat of a radiation freeze goes up. Dew point and temperature also affect leaf wetness, which influences the development of downy mildew. The Kestrel's wind speed readings ensure that spraying is done safely and effectively during appropriate environmental conditions.

A Kestrel Pocket Weather Meter is also a valuable tool when planning your vineyard. Tracking conditions at potential vine locations can help you develop an accurate understanding of your property's microclimates and select the varietals and growing sites that will ensure success.

Crop Harvesting

Crop Harvesting Choosing the best environmental conditions to harvest crops maximises the harvest and the crop quality. The Kestrel Pocket Weather Meter helps farmers track the current and predicted climatic conditions. Whatever the crop you grow, a Kestrel Pocket Weather Meter (such as the Kestrel 3500) makes it simple to monitor field conditions from your pocket in real-time to pinpoint the ideal conditions for maximising your harvest and crop quality. Rugged, portable and simple to use, it also comes at an affordable price.

Livestock Heat & Cold Monitoring

Livestock Heat & Cold Monitoring Heat stress can cause reduced productivity and even death in livestock. The effects of severe heat stress are often seen in the form of reduced reproductive performance, reduced daily weight gain and reduced milk production. By using a Kestrel to monitor temperature and humidity, and referring to the heat index appropriate for your livestock (indices exist for cattle, swine, turkeys and laying hens), a farmer can take necessary cooling measures in time. Cooling measures include increasing ventilation, making plenty of drinking water available, misting the animals, avoiding transport and movement, and withdrawing feed.

Every Kestrel model, from the Kestrel 3000 and up, includes a heat stress index measurement, ensuring you know when to take appropriate cooling measures in time to prevent sickness and loss.

Wind chill is equally important in the winter. A cow's energy requirements are estimated to increase 1% for each degree the wind chill is below 32°F, and the effect is even more severe for a wet cow. These increased energy requirements have to be made up in additional feed or the animals will fail to thrive.

Every Kestrel model from the Kestrel 2000 and up includes wind chill measurement, letting you know when it is critical to provide additional feed energy and/or wind protection.

Aviation

Air fields

Air fields Perfect for temporary airfields or remote airfields, FlexiMet Wind and FlexiMet WX systems are fast to install and ensure personnel on the ground can provide needed landing zone weather data. Data logging functionality delivers long term records ideal for analysis prior to developing a remote or temporary airfield.

Recent applications have seen multiple WindSonic sensors at varying heights gathering data via SpaceLogger data loggers determining the variation in wind velocity from ground level upwards.

Other applications include wind and weather analysis for parachute drop zones, local flying clubs and hot air ballooning events.

Aircraft Hanger Door Operating Systems

Aircraft Hanger Door Operating System FlexiWind systems with a WS-15A Display unit have been used extensively to monitor wind speed and direction to ensure safe operation of hangar doors.

Hangar doors often have high wind speed limits and operators must ensure they work within these. The FlexiWind systems with WS-15A displays not only allow for remote viewing and data logging of wind speed and direction data but there is also a single relay switch within the WS-15A display. This allows the hangar doors to be locked down when a defined wind speed limit is met.

Helipads

Helipads Ideal for harsh remote locations the FlexiMet Wind and FlexiMet WX systems utilise Gill ultrasonic technology guaranteeing accurate data with minimal maintenance. Linked to the IP65 rated WS-15A display, the system is often used as a secondary system, being able to operate locally from a 12V power supply.

Education

Data Buoys

Data Buoys The MetPak Pro sensor allows extra inputs making it ideal for remote environmental data buoy monitoring. The MetPak Pro measures the standard MetPak weather parameters including wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point and barometric pressure. In addition it has the facility for extra inputs to be added enabling sea temperature, precipitation, light readings and depth readings to be acquired.

RPR Ltd can supply the sensor alone or work with the relevant authorities to deliver a complete standalone system. The GBR sailing and canoe teams have both used RPR Ltd's systems for medium to long term monitoring of event locations.

School Weather Stations

School Weather Stations RPR Ltd have been selling weather stations to Schools and other Education establishments for many years. The FlexiMet Wind and FlexiMet WX systems deliver extremely accurate data that is ideal for research purposes. With a power requirement of only 12V, they are quick and easy to install even in remote locations far away from mains power.

The systems will store all the data locally on the SpaceLogger data logger and from here it can be manually transferred to PC using the SD memory card or viewed live on the PC if the system is within a Wi-Fi network. Data is captured and held within a CSV file format making it easy to view within standard Microsoft programs such as Excel.

RPR Ltd can lease, rent or sell the systems depending on the customer requirements.

Emergency Services

Fire-fighting / Emergency Response Vehicles

Fire-fighting / Emergency Response Vehicles To understand air movements and deliver accurate plume modelling it is essential to observe real time environmental conditions.

Richard Paul Russell Ltd have developed a complete weather station utilising WindSonic and MetPak technology that can be fitted to first responders vehicles giving instantaneous weather data within seconds of arrival. The system can be mounted directly onto a vehicle or positioned remotely using a tripod or pole mounting fixed to a structure.

Environmental Monitoring

Remote Weather Data Collection

Remote Weather Data Collection SpaceLoggers have been widely deployed for many varied outdoor environmental monitoring applications, including climatic monitoring as well as indoor monitoring within offices, workplaces, warehouses, schools and other premises.

SpaceLoggers are designed to function remotely requiring only 7-30V DC power. The data is stored on an SD memory card so no PC hook-up is required in the field. In the case of the SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data logger, wind speed and direction can be relayed directly to PC over the local Wi-Fi network.

The SpaceLogger S10 is a hugely versatile data logger and may be configured for virtually any sensor outputting RS232 data, including devices requiring polling or handshake to enable data output.

Mapping Conditions & Life on the Sea Bed

Mapping Conditions & Life on the Sea Bed SpaceLogger S10 data loggers have been utilised to map the conditions and life on the ocean floor. SpaceLogger S10 data loggers were being towed at depths of 3000 metres whilst taking recordings of CTD (water conductivity, temperature and depth).

The SpaceLogger S10 data loggers were part of the equipment on three 3000 metre depth rated ‘pods' along with batteries, video processing equipment and control electronics.

Marcus Shirley of Mr ROV, a member of the research team, confirmed back to us:
"The loggers worked great and allowed us to reliably record accurate data which we were able to easily import into our scientific modelling software. The time stamping feature allowed us to sync up all the data with the logged data from the ship's GPS and vehicle USBL position transponder, creating a very comprehensive data set. Many thanks for all your help. The SpaceLogger S10 data loggers were great and 100% reliable, which is very important when you're on a ship far from land!"

Fire-fighting & Emergency Response

Fire-fighting

Fire-fighting The Kestrel range has been used by fire-fighters and emergency response teams for many years. The Kestrel range has a model that meets all requirements from wildland fire-fighting to search and rescue to hazardous materials response.

Preferred models are the Kestrel 3000 and Kestrel 3500 delivering fire behaviour prediction from wind speed combined with temperature, relative humidity, dew point and wet bulb temperature. This information is key to monitoring heat stress and avoiding heat injury or death of personnel.

Emergency Response

Emergency Response Search and Rescue teams often require additional density altitude with wind readings data to ensure rescue craft and personnel have exact weather conditions ensuring safe operations. The Kestrel 5000 delivers barometric pressure, pressure trend, altitude, humidity, dew point and heat stress readings combined with other parameters in an extremely compact and portable design ensuring quick data retrieval that can be communicated to rescue teams, aircraft and dog team leaders.

HAZMAT teams can rely on the Kestrel 5400 with Bluetooth and portable vane mount as a complete weather kit able to measure all the parameters required for plume modelling whether CAMEO/ALOHA or PEAC. Personnel dressed in heavy protective clothing are safeguarded from the potential effect of heat stress with this variable being specifically measured. Using the Bluetooth data transfer facility all data can be logged and analysed before during and after personnel deployment.

Health & Safety Monitoring

Working at Height

The Health and Safety Executive in their health and safety in roof work paper make specific reference to wind and weather conditions stating that weather conditions should be considered when planning any work at height. Obviously wind, rain, ice or snow can have a direct impact on how secure a foot holding will be.

HSE Advises Maximum Wind Speed

HSE Advises Maximum Wind Speed 1. You should anticipate adverse weather conditions and take suitable precautions. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 specifically require that weather conditions be considered when planning any work at height. Rain, ice or snow can turn a secure footing into a skating rink. A roof should always be inspected before work starts to see if conditions have changed and to check whether it is safe to work.

2. A sudden gust of wind can lead to loss of balance. Roof sheets and, in some circumstances, roofing membrane should not be fixed in windy weather as people can easily be thrown off-balance while carrying a sheet up to or on the roof, particularly when handling large sheeting materials during work on industrial buildings.

3. It is not only in industrial roofing that care must be taken in windy conditions. A slater or tiler cannot work safely in high winds and a roll of roofing membrane can become mobile if it is caught by the wind. On flat roofs, materials such as felts are equally affected and the effect of high wind upon hot bitumen when it is being poured can be extremely dangerous.

4. When deciding whether to continue or suspend work, consider:
  • wind speed
  • the measures that have already been taken to prevent falls from the roof
  • the position and height of the roof and the size of the material being handled

5. A competent contractor should use a hand-held anemometer to measure wind speed if large sheets are being handled.

6. The Beaufort scale (Table 2) gives descriptions of how trees, smoke etc will behave at certain wind speeds.

Laboratory Applications

Laboratory Equipment with RS232 Output

Laboratory Equipment with RS232 Output Much laboratory equipment is supplied with an RS232 output. Where continuous connection to a PC is impractical a SpaceLogger can offer a dedicated data logging solution for short or long term monitoring.

The SpaceLogger S10 is readily configured to record the output from numerous instruments and devices producing time-stamped records in .CSV file format.

SpaceLoggers are commonly used for recording cycle records from autoclave machines. They provide a cost effective and efficient way to monitor equipment with an RS232 output including weighing scales, refrigerators, freezers and storage rooms.

The SpaceLogger T10 model is ideal for balances or analysers with a print command and RS232 output and will keep a text record identical to the paper print-out. This file can be read using Notepad or similar.

Marine, Ships & Harbours

Dockside Cranes

Dockside Cranes Dockside cranes can be exposed to the worst weather conditions and as such are susceptible to wind related damage and potential collapse. Operators need clear and accurate wind data delivered to the cab and monitored remotely to ensure they work within guidelines.

Richard Paul Russell Ltd has developed specific wind systems for crane use. The systems utilise a Gill ultrasonic sensor mounted high on the crane jib / boom. This is then linked to a WS-15A display in the cab that has high and low alarm settings ensuring an audible or visual alarm is activated when the wind speed reaches the maximum allowed.

The wind data is recorded using the SpaceLogger W10 or SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data loggers providing date and time stamped data for operator records. In the case of the SpaceLogger W8 Wireless data logger, wind speed and direction can be relayed directly to a site office PC and viewed live using our WeatherFile website.

The majority of systems we supply are customised and Richard Paul Russell Ltd will work with customers to develop bespoke solutions. Our expert team can advise on a solution that will meet your exact requirements.

Port & Harbour Authorities

Port & Harbour Authorities Richard Paul Russell Ltd has developed a cost effective stand-alone weather station using the Gill MetPak and Gill WindSonic sensor. Pete Moore from Shooting Sports Magazine reviews the Kestrel 2500NV weather meter

"If accurate shooting is your goal then you need to have all bases covered, consider a wind meter ... "

"... I approach my hunting by ensuring I have all the data and the right items I need to make the shot count every time... a chance to try out a wind meter was a bit of a revelation and now I know what I have been missing.

For me the real revelation was to know the actual wind speed, followed by the ability to get high, low and average readings quickly and apply them to a firing solution. The biggest surprise was how far out my eyeball methods of judging the speed were."

Pete Reckons

• If you take your shooting seriously this is an essential item
• Well made and easy to use
• Good choice of models/functions
